If you’ve been following me on Instagram recently, you’ll have seen my posts each morning. I have been making my Morning Coffee each day and posting a small clip or picture of it. I began doing this as a reason to get into a new habit of making a fresh, proper cup of coffee each day. The idea being to create a morning routine.
This has really become something that I enjoy and even look forward to getting up to do. I thought I would share my findings in doing this each morning, and how I find it really helps set me up for the day ahead.
1. Building A Morning Routine
First up, making the coffee each morning has helped shape my mornings. I get up slightly earlier than I used to so that I have time to grind the beans and brew. Be it a pour-over, Aeropress or French Press. Whilst this sounds like it could be hard work and something that could easily be seen as a chore, and as someone who would usually get up with barely enough time to get out of bed before leaving for work, I wasn’t sure I would stick with it. But this routine has been great, and getting up earlier comes, mostly, easier now.
I get up with the knowledge that there is a task to be done, and that it has a reward of amazing coffee at its end. The routine has stuck and posting each morning held me accountable in the initial days. I now feel that it is something that has helped get me up in the mornings to start my day.
Building a morning routine is something that I think is a great benefit to anyone. Regardless of if they are good or bad at getting up in the morning. It allows you to work in autopilot for a small amount of time before you realise that you have got up and are ready to face the day.
2. Caffeine – The Energy Boost
No surprises here. The caffeine kick that comes from the coffee is something that obviously helps set you up for the day. It takes about fifteen minutes for the caffeine in a coffee to be in your bloodstream. So bear this in mind. I try to have my coffee for a good amount of time before leaving for work. This means that it is fully active by the time I arrive and am ready to face the day.
A word of caution, however. Too much caffeine can have an adverse effect here and the come-down from it is not fun! So don’t just keep topping up the caffeine before some has worn off, in a similar way to alcohol. Too much in a short space will hit you fast and not in a good way! But having enough for the boost of energy it brings definitely sets up the day and makes it a great ingredient for a morning.
3. Focusing On A Single Action
The time that you spend making the coffee, whilst you are grinding the beans, pouring the water, and waiting for the coffee to brew, gives you a focus point. In the morning where there are a million and one things rushing through your head about the day to come. The ability to just stop, and think about one thing for a moment, brings your focus into a narrow point.
I’m not going to say this is a meditation, but there is a small aspect that I feel is related. To just have one thing to do, watching the timer and the weight as you brew helps clear the mind for just a small moment is an art of relaxation and clarity. This focus is a way to clear the mind of all the other things for a few moments. To set up the mind ready for the day and mentally preparing for what is to come.
4. A Moment To Pause
Similarly to the moment of clarity of making the coffee, once it’s brewed and ready you are able to pause for a moment and take a sip. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes you’ll be running around whilst sipping coffee in the seconds and moments of getting ready for work. But, that first sip you take, just after it’s brewed, and the aroma of fresh coffee is in the air, you will stop and drink, for just a moment, and in that moment you are paused. It might last half a second, or it might last a minute, but you stop to taste the coffee.
Pausing is something we probably don’t do enough in life in general. Stopping to just let our mind and body catch up to ourselves, so finding that moment first thing in the morning is a great way to set up your day. Having a little extra time in the morning while the rest of the world is quiet, can give you calmness and peace before everything else wakes up.
5. A Feeling Of Accomplishment
The feeling just after you have made the coffee and have a steaming hot cup in your hand, is a feeling of accomplishment. It may be small. It may only be a cup of coffee. But you have got up, focused and given yourself time to do something for yourself, before the day has really begun. Similar to how they say that making your bed in the morning has a positive effect on your day, I feel that making yourself a coffee has a similar effect. It sets the tone for the rest of your day. That you can achieve whatever you want, one task ticked off the to-do list already. Not only that but it was a task that rewarded yourself immediately. You’ve worked for it and reaped the reward within the minutes of your morning.
What chance has the rest of the day got to stop you? If that doesn’t set up your day, I don’t know what will!
So there you have it, 5 reasons why making yourself a good cup of coffee in the morning helps set-up your day. So why not aim to get up just a little earlier, and carve yourself some ‘you’ time in the morning. Allow yourself to set the day up in a way that looks after yourself. Bring a little moment of calm before the day begins.
